Artisans in Pomaire Look to Continue Production

Touring through Orlando Malhue’s Pomaire workshop, the broken ceramic pottery and fractured oven are distressing reminders of the earthquake that hit southern and central Chile this past Saturday. Pomaire, which is now populated with wooden housing after the 1985 earthquake destroyed everything, suffered minimal damage from the outside. However, many find the interior of their homes and workshops left in pieces.

Wednesday’s visit to Pomaire, an hour and a half southwest of Santiago, revealed the substantial damage made to Malhue’s workshop and three other workshops. These producers are part of an 11 family collective that works with Comparte in the exportation of traditional Chilean clay pottery from Pomaire.

Despite piles of broken handmade products that are rising in workshops and on the edge of the town, making immediate repairs to ovens is the main concern. They are also considering redirecting this
effort toward building a more efficient, eco-friendly model. "The people want to continue working," explained Enrique Acevedo. Based on what is left, Acevedo’s oven is in need of serious repairs or replacement. This project would take at least the next month to complete. "We are depressed. Really, at a great loss."

The final workshop that Comparte visited had yet been able to evaluate damages to their oven. On Wednesday, the workshop of Miguel Salinas and the rest of the Pomaire community finally regained electricity and water five days after the earthquake. The entire sheet metal roof that protected the workshop of Salinas and his family collapsed. As they begin to place together the roof they will be assessing the damages made to their oven.

Many of these ovens are only 10 -15 years old, post-constructions of the 1985 earthquake that took its epicenter next to Pomaire. In addition to the ovens, the workshop and packaging warehouse shared by the collective also suffered serious damage. One of the adobe walls is in the condition to fall at any moment and the roof has been parted in multiple places making it vulnerable to seasonal rains. Comparte will be following up this situation to ensure safe working conditions.

Recorriendo el taller de Orlando Malhue en Pomaire, la cerámica rota y el horno fracturado son un recordatorio doloroso del terremoto que azotó el sur y centro de Chile el sábado pasado. Pomaire, ahora mayoritariamente con viviendas de madera, después del terremoto de 1985 que destruyó todo, sufrió daños menores mirados desde el exterior. Sin embargo, el interior de muchos de sus hogares y talleres han quedado en muy malas condiciones.

La visita realizada el miércoles a Pomaire, una hora y media al suroeste de Santiago, reveló el daño significativo del taller de Malhue y otros tres. Estos productores son parte de un colectivo de 11 familias que trabajan con Comparte en la exportación de la cerámica tradicional chilena de Pomaire.

Mientras los montones de productos hechos a mano, quebrados, comienzan a aumentar en los talleres y en las afueras de la ciudad, realizar las reparaciones de inmediato a los hornos es la principal preocupación. Se está considerando también la reorientación de este esfuerzo hacia la construcción de un sistema más eficiente y mejor para el medio ambiente. "La gente quiere seguir trabajando”, explicó Enrique Acevedo. Basado en lo que queda, el horno de Acevedo requiere reparaciones intensivas o reemplazo. “Estamos deprimidos. En realidad, es una gran pérdida", destaca.

En el último taller que visitó Comparte todavía no se ha podido evaluar los daños en su horno. El miércoles, el taller de Miguel de Salinas y el resto de la comunidad de Pomaire, finalmente recuperó la electricidad y el agua, cinco días después del terremoto. Todo el techo de zinc que protegía el taller de Salinas y su familia se derrumbó. Cuando empiece la reconstrucción del techo, estarán evaluando el daño sufrido por su horno.




Muchos de estos hornos tienen sólo 10 a 15 años de edad, construidos después del terremoto de 1985 que tuvo su epicentro cerca de Pomaire. Además de los hornos, el taller y la bodega de embalaje compartida por el colectivo también sufrió graves daños.

Una de las paredes de adobe está en condiciones de caer en cualquier momento y el techo se ha separado en varios lugares que lo hace vulnerable a las lluvias estacionales. Comparte hará el seguimiento de esta situación para garantizar condiciones seguras de trabajo.

In particular, we sending support to Lipimávida Fruits, production plant of canned papaya, in Ilocos, VII Region, which was completely devastated by the tsunami. We still have no news from this region.

Like these producers, there are many other artisans that work with COMPARTE
who live and work in forcefully struck by this misfortune that has befallen the country. As major communication lines remain cut, we will continue to try
contacting these artisans and producers. We are also taking up contact with people in the rural areas surrounding Santiago that were also strongly impacted.
